Our Project Idea

Even though it didn't take long as we're only in the third week of our portfolio project, we (my partners Vicky and Bella) have finally aired out the necessary information to transform our "idea" into a vision.

The opening of the film will show a woman preparing to host a dinner date at her home. Our intention is to make the first portion of this opening seem as normal and romantic as possible for people to even think that it could be a romance movie. We will attempt to create this opinion by first, starting the opening off with hands from a woman off-screen placing a vinyl into a record player and moving the tonearm to start playing a soft and instrumental song. I actually spent a few minutes trying to find out the name of the part of a record player that touches the vinyl and actually plays it. After searching through the Google results of "vinyl record player," I decided to search up "parts of a record player" to find the following picture that contains the name of the part I was looking for.

Anyway, right after this small opening of the opening, the song will go over a montage of a woman setting up the dinner table and cooking food, switching back and forth between the two aspects of a home dinner date. Again, this sequence will appear like an extremely regular set of actions to occur UNTIL the ease of the opening is interrupted by a brief flashback sequence. The woman will be slicing a fruit or vegetable (we're still unsure which type) and a piece will fall to the floor. When she reaches down and picks it up, the knife still in her hand, everything about the environment will shift. The knife and woman's hand/arm will be covered in blood as will the floor, the source of it being shown as a man's dead body on the floor in front of her as the same music playing being now distorted will add to the flashback's tension. The scene will transition back to the normal setting it was in before and the woman will throw away the piece of fruit and inside the trashcan, the audience will be able to see bloody cleaning gloves and even more bloody towels laying inside. She will drop the chopped pieces of fruit into a bowl and place it on the table when her phone suddenly buzzes. She will then pull out her phone to see she received a text from someone named Jackson, reading, "Hey Elena, I'm outside." Below the most recent text, which is Jackson, will be several other men whose last texts are stating their arrival at Elena's home. For example, "i'm here," "just got here," "walking up to your door," etc. After seeing that Elena has met with several men before and all of their last texts have been from before entering her home, the audience will be able to tell that Elena is a serial killer.

Speaking about the texts, Vicky and Bella were thinking of showing it through the normal messages of a phone but I was thinking that since they're young and since we should probably explain how Elena is finding and meeting these men, we can have the texts be shown through a dating app. Whether it's Tinder or... well, that's the only dating app I know since I'm only 15, it might be troubling to actually show it since we're minors and we can't sign up for it. If anything, we can use one of our parents' or adult family members' phones and then make several Tinder accounts (Elena's account and then all of the guys that she's texted) which hopefully doesn't cause many complications.

Elena will be seen smiling at the text and the title card will be shown.

Regarding the title card, we came up with the title "Manslaughter" and Vicky had the amazing suggestion of distorting the word "man" in "manslaughter" to emphasize that Elena is a serial killer and targets men specifically. We could either have the word "man" melting or dripping to resemble blood, have a more sinister font for it, or maybe something else entirely different. We haven't aired out all the details for that part but we have come up with the concept of it.

During the title card, the doorbell will ring and either the two minutes ends right there or if we have some extra seconds, we can show the front door from either the inside or outside and have Elena open the door, either Elena or her date being shown on the other side which depends on the camera's placement.

When it comes to the description of the film, it's pretty much just going to be a cat-and-mouse type of thriller where the entire movie is Elena versus her date, Jackson. Since Elena has had several victims and the movie is about Jackson, we were thinking of having something different about this guy. Either he can win and kill Elena at the end, get away from her and potentially lead to a cliffhanger where she chases him down, or ends up revealing himself as a serial killer as well. We're leaning more towards the serial killer ending as it can explain Elena's motives for killing all these men: she's searching for the perfect boyfriend. By meeting a charming man who also is as inhumane and violent as her, the two of them can become the perfect ones for each other and while this ending is concluding, it also has room for a cliffhanger as a sequel could be about their relationship being a murderous couple.

When I think of a cat-and-mouse thriller revolving around a man and woman who are revolved romantically, I instantly think of Ready Or Not (2019) but instead of the man (and his family) hunting the woman, the woman hunts the man. We wanted the woman to be the killer as for one, seeing the woman preparing for a dinner date adds to the assumption that she and the film in general will be innocent. The second reason is that it's 2025 and it is time roles are reversed and in this case, the man shouldn't always be the one who is criminal and preying on victims as in real life, it isn't always like that either.

Ready Or Not (2019)

Circling back to when I mentioned on how Elena and Jackson could be in a murderous relationship together in a potential sequel, I envision them as Joe and Love from You (2018) but in a different font. Joe and Love (spoilers) are both murderers and they go through their relationship killing together but also killing separately and having to help each other clean their murders up. The season from You (2018) where Joe and Love are a couple can be a great inspiration for a sequel on Manslaughter/Elena and Jackson's relationship. If we did make a sequel and continue with this "killer" element, we'd obviously have to change the title and instead of something as basic as "Manslaughter 2," we always have the chance to title it a different type of murder such as "Homicide" or straight up "Murder."

Credit Sequences - Horror

I'm not gonna lie, it was hard finding the openings on YouTube to horror movies I not only know but love but I've landed on my 3!

The first one is going to be the credit sequence for Smile (2022).

In this credit sequence, it's right after the curse in the movie, which is the main plot, is spread to our protagonist, Rose. She's a psychologist and her patient has just killed herself and spread the curse to Rose as whoever witnesses a suicide from someone infected with the curse is now the next person to have it. As the dead woman lays on the floor, an unsettling smile on her face, the red words "PARAMOUNT PICTURES PRESENTS" appears

Filming Openings - Horror

I love horror movies so thinking of film openings to rewatch for the planning of my project is easy but thinking of film openings that can actually influence my own is the tricky part. Since I already have a general idea of what I want my film opening to be, I need to find openings that are similar to it. Me and my partners have decided we want our film opening to start with a normal environment in a normal situation but with a sudden twist that changes the entire vibe of the opening/film.

Instantly, the first opening I thought of was of A Quiet Place Part II (2021) since it has the exact same general concept of our idea.

In this opening, it shows the main characters in their normal environment before suddenly, meteors are seen dropping down from the sky and the town is attacked by creatures. The opening does a great job of setting the tone of the film but purposely doesn't provide much context. Besides elaborating slightly on the origin of the monsters, it doesn't provide much more context as for one, the previous film did enough of that and second, the creators want to keep the audience just as caught up as the characters in the film are. The opening uses a lot of tracking and panning to ensure the audience is able to see exactly what the characters are also experiencing and to make them feel like they're with them too. One of the characters is a deaf girl and when chaos erupts, the perspectives switch between throughout different members of the family which means switching from the sound of complete destruction and panic to utter silence to emphasize her fear.

Another example of an opening that shows a regular setting with an unexpected turn of events is from Trap (2024).

The movie starts with a father and daughter on the way to a concert and once they arrive to the venue, the father notices how many police officers are present. The concert starts and he goes off to the bathroom where he suddenly pulls out his phone and checks a camera he set up to watch his hostage. The opening starts with the credits showing while one of the songs of the artist singing at the concert in the film plays, transitioning into the movie with the same song playing but now the daughter is singing it in the car. It consists of several wide and two shots to display their father/daughter relationship and uses panning to provide context and build tension.

The final opening I'm showing is from Scream (2022) and its shift from normalcy to sinister.

In this opening, a teenage girl is home alone when her home phone rings and she soon learns the caller is outside her home. The opening shows that the character cares for her loved ones as her friend's life is threatened by the caller unless the character participates in his "game." When she loses the game, the caller attacks her and switches the already uncomfortable situation into a criminal one. This scene consists of close-up shots combined with suspenseful music to build tension as one would feel in an overwhelming situation as this one. This keeps the audience immersed and the teenage girl's traits and motivations keep the audience hooked and gives them a liking towards her character.

Transitioning to a Portfolio Project

To be introduced a project that I'm given two months to work on, I must admit it's definitely a type of assignment I'm never received before and will have to get used to. This means I will have to spend all the time I am given to work on this project wisely and ensure I reach the requirements listed for it.

The first step to this project is to figure out what type of opening I want for my film. I am working with two partners for this project but we all agreed we want our opening to be instantly attention-hooking (as anyone would want to) but more specifically, mystery. We'll figure out the details by looking at the Nearpod on film openings and incorporating all the best parts of an opening into making a great one.

While we pitched a few ideas in class when we had some minutes available, we are still far from choosing on even a concept of an opening. We have lots of work to do and we'll work together by putting together our opinions, ideas, influences, and brainstorming. We're unsure whether we will be coming up with the name before or after coming up with the planned-out film opening but that's only one of our many unanswered questions for the making of this project. Hopefully in the next upcoming week, we will have a lot more confirmed and a lot less to figure out.

Genre Research for Portfolio

I personally love when the opening of a film is suspenseful and instantly makes the viewer start asking questions. I can't think of genres that apply these characteristics better than my favorites: thriller and mystery.

While thrillers are commonly associated with dark plots and terrifying visuals, they're not exactly "scary" movies but more suspenseful ones that rely on building tension. Suspense and tension are two important factors for this genre because they are used to create a feeling of unease and anxiety and usually help lead up to a plot twist. One of my favorite thriller movies that I've watched recently was Trap (2024), a movie set in the perspective of a serial killer with his daughter at a concert surrounded by police officers who are searching for him. The film relied heavily on building tension among the viewers and keeping them on the edge of their seats. It didn't contain any popcorn-spilling jump scares but it made the viewers uncomfortable in other ways using scenes of the main character in risky situations where he's moments and/or inches away from being caught. (Example)

Mystery are one of the most interesting genres that can hook a viewer's attention in an instant. The reason this type of genre is so attention-grabbing is because there is always a question that the film revolves around. A film I watched two years ago after reading the book for the film, No Exit (2022), is a great example of mystery as the "question" of the film regards a little girl in the back of a van at a rest stop in the middle of a snowstorm. While this mystery's first question is answered early into the film, there were several more questions/mysteries that came afterwards and continued to keep the viewers hooked. (Example)
